Introduction
Accessing the Data
Metadata
The polygons in this dataset are a digital representation of the distribution or extent of geological units within the area. Polygons have a range of attributes including unit name, age, lithological description and an abbreviated symbol for use in labelling the polygons. These have been extracted from the Rock Units Table held in the Department of Mines and Energy Merlin Database. The lines in this dataset are a digital representation of the position of the boundaries of geological units and other linear features such as faults, bedding trends, dykes, fold axial traces, jointing patterns and other unassigned lineaments. The lines are attributed with a description of the type of line represented.
The digital data is supplied in geographic co-ordinates (Lat/Long) based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia- GDA94. Note however that the extents of the data included for each map tile include those ground features that were defined previously by the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) map sheet extents.
The data is in MapInfo .tab, ESRI Shape and Arc/Info export file formats on DVD DISC 1 and DVD DISC 2 of this geoscience data package. The data files are contained within the folder of "GEOLOGY_DETAILED_MARCH07"on DISC 1, and on DISC 2 within "GEOLOGY_REGIONAL_MARCH07". There are no changes to the Regional Geology Data on DISC 2 in this release although colour enhancement has been included.

Programs exist for the viewing and manipulation of the data contained on this DVD. Accessing the digital datasets will require GIS software. The following GIS viewers can be downloaded from the internet.
ESRI ArcExplorer www.esriaustralia.com.au
MapInfo ProViewer www.mapinfo.com collectively ("the websites").
***NOTE: Please be advised that these later edition viewers use Java runtime environment which has known conflicts reading the codes for the attribute files e.g. 9543_r.dbf. The Java versions may fail to list the shape or tab file data in navagite catalog windows.
If this is a problem then an earlier non-java version of the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) ArcExplorer 1.1 has been included on this DVD to download and install and view the shape file data. This version of ArcExplorer is no longer supported by ESRI and is included as a client service under the conditions covered in the "Disclaimer" section below.

Metadata for the Queensland Geological Mapping Data is contained in .html files placed in the root folder of each 1:100 000 or Regional sheet tile. For ArcMap users metadata for each sheet area is held in an .xml file within the ESRI shape folders for viewing in ArcCatalog. NOTE: Metadata that is provided with datasets that have not been altered from previous DVD releases have not been updated for Department / Contact detail changes.
